Biden: Putin Will Not Prevail in Ukraine War as US & UK Stand United
In a strong statement of unity, US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to support Ukraine against Russia’s ongoing aggression. During a White House meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday (Sept 13), Biden declared that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not succeed in his war with Ukraine.
US Commitment to Ukraine’s Defence
Biden highlighted the enduring partnership between the United States and the United Kingdom in aiding Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of defending Ukraine from Russia’s attacks, saying:
"The United States is committed to standing with you to help Ukraine as a defense against Russia's onslaught and aggression and be clear, make it clear that Putin will not prevail in this war, and the people of Ukraine will prevail."
Starmer’s Call for Support During a Crucial Period
Prime Minister Starmer echoed Biden’s sentiments, pointing out the critical importance of the coming weeks and months for Ukraine. He stressed that ongoing support for Ukraine is vital in what he referred to as a "war of freedom." Starmer remarked:
"...with Ukraine, where I think the next few weeks and months could be crucial. Very, very important that we support Ukraine in this vital war of freedom."
Discussions on Expanding Ukraine’s Missile Capabilities
The two leaders also explored the possibility of allowing Ukraine to use Western-supplied missiles, including the long-range US ATACMS and British Storm Shadow missiles, to strike targets deep within Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long called for access to these weapons, hoping they will limit Russia’s capacity to launch further attacks.
US Officials Question the Impact of Easing Missile Restrictions
Despite these discussions, some US officials remain sceptical about whether expanding Ukraine's missile capabilities would significantly alter the course of the war. While Ukraine has already been using drones to target Russian sites, the ATACMS missiles could enhance their strike range. However, officials expressed concerns over the high cost and limited supply of these advanced weapons.
